NISS is a research institution
with diverse and comprehensive programs of study. It undertakes fundamental and applied studies which cover the following areas: national security; international security and foreign policy; national defence policy; social strategies; political analyses and strategies; economic strategies; humanitarian policy; environmental security; informational security; regional developments.
- The basic task of NISS is to support through its activity policy- and decision-making processes. Using a system approach, the Institute:
- formulates options and research-based recommendations for the President of Ukraine and government bodies in all major areas of national security,
- provides policy-relevant research and rigorous analysis on issues related to national security in the strategic context,
- analyses the main threats to Ukraine's national interests and their dynamics,
- evaluates Ukraine's opportunities and risks on regional and global levels,
- makes expert assessment of national policies, legislative acts and legal documents.
- Since its creation the Institute has been ruled by the following principles stipulated in its charter:
- the fostering of strategic thinking in all instances of Government;
- the promotion of the development of democratic processes and market reforms;
- the development and dissemination of independent, unbiased views on Ukraine's development with a futuristic perspective.
- Guided by these principles, NISS is committed to bringing the results of its research to the attention of a wide audience through reports, conferences and publications, and to the attention of the general public through ad hoc commentary and information for the world and Ukrainian media.
